How much does a tourist need to pay to hire a Tourist Guide in Malaysia?

In Malaysia, licensed Tourist Guides are required to complete an accredited training course, which typically costs between RM5,000 and RM8,000. The Tourist Guide Course Module generally takes approximately six months to complete and includes a written examination and a practical commentary assessment. Upon passing these requirements, candidates must also attend a five-day confirmation course before being officially licensed under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia.

All training institutions offering Tourist Guide courses must be accredited and recognized by MOTAC. For further information, including a list of approved training institutions, applicants are advised to refer to the official MOTAC resources HERE

To maintain high standards within the tourism industry and ensure guides remain updated on current trends, regulations, and knowledge, all licensed Tourist Guides are required to attend Continuing Tourism Related Education (CTRE) programmes. CTRE is a mandatory refresher training initiative regulated by MOTAC for licence renewal.

As a visitor to Malaysia, it is strongly recommended to engage a licensed Tourist Guide to ensure a high-quality, professional, and enriching travel experience tailored to your interests and destinations.

The Malaysian Tourist Guides Council serves as the national umbrella body representing licensed Tourist Guides and their associations in Malaysia. The council plays a key role in standardising guiding practices, organising CTRE programmes, supporting national tourism initiatives, and promoting professionalism within the industry. It also advocates for licensed guides and addresses issues such as illegal guiding activities.

Tourist Guide IRWAN’s STORY

Irwan Md Azahar wasn’t just a tourist guide — he was a storyteller, a bridge between worlds, and a quiet guardian of culture. Every morning, before the first group arrived, Irwan would walk the streets he knew so well. Whether it was a bustling city corner, a hidden village path, or a quiet historical site, he treated each place with the same respect — like an old friend with stories waiting to be told again. Visitors often expected facts: dates, names, timelines. And Irwan could give them all that effortlessly. But what made him unforgettable was something deeper. He didn’t just explain history — he brought it to life.
He would pause under an old tree and say, “Imagine this place 100 years ago…”
Suddenly, people weren’t just tourists anymore — they were travelers through time. Irwan had a natural way of reading people. If someone looked curious, he’d dive deeper. If someone seemed tired, he’d lighten the mood with humor. If a child tagged along, he’d turn stories into little adventures. To him, guiding wasn’t about talking — it was about connecting.
There was one thing he always believed:
“Every place has a soul. My job is to help people feel it.”
Over time, guests didn’t just remember the places they visited — they remembered him. The guide who made history feel alive. The guide who made them laugh under the hot sun. The guide who showed them not just where they were, but why it mattered.
And long after the tours ended, when the buses left and the crowds faded, Irwan would still be there — walking the same paths, quietly carrying the stories forward, waiting for the next group of strangers to turn into listeners, and listeners to turn into believers

Because for Irwan Md Azahar, being a tourist guide was never just a job.
It was a calling
